Squirrel and Tortoise
As therapists, when we are met with the Tortoise in our therapy room, how do we show up? Therapists often have a curious nature, like squirrels, digging to find substantial nourishment.
Tortoises, on the other hand, tend to hide, “go inside,” or shut down when they feel even a little bit threatened. Their survival strategies are what keep them safe and floating through life. But what is activated when they come into contact with a bold, aggressive, and sociable squirrel? Who is ready to engage, and what’s considered “normal” or acceptable? What inner dialogue does a dormant tortoise stir up for an active squirrel?
Let’s take some time to think about our roles in this relationship!
AAP Southern Region is a very active part of AAP. We are a multidisciplinary group, dedicated to keeping the art of psychotherapy alive and dynamic. AAP is rooted in the value of experiential, expressive, depth, and humanistically oriented psychotherapies. We foster development of the therapist on all levels, especially the person. The mission of the American Academy of Psychotherapists is to invigorate and support the psychotherapist’s quest for excellence and growth through authentic interpersonal engagement. Come join us!
