THEME

Our Bodies, Our Stories

We experience the world and all of our relationships through the instrument of our bodies. From the moment of arrival, our senses absorb information about how others see us, feel about us and relate to us. This information influences our sense of self and our relationships, and shapes the ways we carry ourselves. Our bodies are central themes in our stories.

Join us for an enlivening Summer Workshop 2024 in the glorious Green Mountains of Vermont, where we’ll come together to explore all the history, meaning and wisdom your body has to share. In a setting designed for comfort and safety, we’ll invite you to explore how you inhabit your body, how the body you live in shapes your experience of the world around you, and how we can use our awareness of these things in our therapeutic work. We invite you to consider presenting a workshop exploring body-oriented themes such as:

  • The Use of Touch & Movement in Psychotherapy
  • The Vicissitudes of Aging
  • Intersectionality
  • Athleticism
  • Shame
  • Illness & Death
  • Addiction
  • Somatic Therapies
  • Gender Fluidity
  • The Sexuality Spectrum
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Living with Disability in an Ableist Society
  • Beauty & Ugliness
  • Bioenergetics
  • Food, Weight and Body Image
  • The Adventure of Menopause

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop strategies for deepening clients’ awareness of body sensations associated with emotion, trauma and expression.
  2. Explore clients’ experience of/in their bodies through the prism of intersectionality, to broaden understanding of our clients’ experience of racial/ethnic/size/ability/age/gender bias.
  3. Identify clinical and ethical concerns raised by the pressure psychotherapists may feel to modify their approach to psychotherapy in order to adapt to shifting cultural/political tides exemplified by the ME TOO movement, anti-racism, identity politics, etc.

Get creative! The broader and more imaginative our offerings, the richer our conference will be.
